CENTENNIAL UPDATE: April Events

Saturday, April 25, will be packed with events related to our April Centennial theme, the Anthropology of Food and Nutrition. A “Community Walk/Run/Bike/Ride the Trolley to Raise Awareness of Food Insecurity,” co-sponsored by the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, begins the exciting day at 8:30 a.m. From 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the Arizona State Museum lawn will be home to “10,000 Years of Eating in the Southwest,” with tours, music, and Southwestern specialty foods. And at 11:00 a.m., Professors Emeriti Suzanne Fish and Paul Fish will lead a Food Tour, “Local Foods from Tucson's Past,” on Tumamoc Hill. Find out about all the April events and register for the tour here.

The April block of events also includes “Up in Smoke: The History of Barbecue with Host Steven Raichlen” on Thursday evening, April 23. The Friday afternoon symposium on April 24 is “The Human Appetite: A Symposium on Food and Anthropology,” and features Associate Professors Maribel AlvarezMamadou Baro, and Ivy Pike; recent graduate Ashley Stinnett (Ph.D. Arizona, 2014); and graduate students Victoria Moses and Amanda Hilton. Details for both events are available here.

Still More in April: Are you attending this year’s Society for American Archaeology annual meeting in San Francisco? On Friday, April 17, the University of Arizona Press will host a reception in honor of the School of Anthropology’s Centennial at 3:00 p.m. in their booth at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square. We look forward to seeing everyone there! (Original Digest publication date: 4/10/15)
