Understanding Healthy Homes Interventions and Educational Benefits

Each year, housing conditions in the US are implicated in thousands of deaths and hundreds of thousands of illnesses and injuries requiring medical attention. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Healthy Homes Rating System (HHRS) is a system for grading the severity of threats to health and safety in any dwelling to enable risks from hazards to be removed or minimized.

The Sonora Environmental Research Institute, LLC (SERI), a community-based, non-profit organization that has been extensively involved with environmental, health and safety issues in southern Arizona for over 30 years, has worked with HUD for more than a decade to understand and address health and safety concerns in homes in southern Arizona.

In this collaboration, SERI and BARA researchers are conducting the first evaluation of long-term safety and educational benefits of healthy homes interventions. The study aims to determine the effectiveness and longevity of the interventions and education for reducing unintentional injuries and fires resulting from housing-related hazards; and to determine the barriers and incentives affecting future use of these cost-effective strategies.
