Since 2020, BARA researchers have worked with colleagues in the University of Arizona College of Engineering, School of Mining and Mineral Resources, and the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources, to understand and address the demographic disparity, especially the underrepresentation of women and Hispanics, in engineering.

This research uses participant observation during engineering classes, clubs, and events; interviews with students, advisors, graduates, and faculty; and focus groups to uncover crucial intersectional factors in students’ choice of engineering disciplines, and to help non-diverse engineering disciplines achieve greater participation of underrepresented groups, especially women and Hispanic students.
