Spring 2015 Graduation

Spring gradation has come and gone, but School of Anthropology graduates are never forgotten! Today we celebrate our newest alumni. Of 58 graduating seniors this spring, 44 earned B.A. degrees, 11 earned B.S. in Human Biology degrees, and two earned B.S. in Archaeology degrees. This summer three more seniors will graduate with the B.S. in Human Biology and fifteen will graduate with a B.A. this summer. Spring graduation also saw the awarding of six Doctorates, three M.A. degrees, and four M.A. in Applied Archaeology degrees. Congratulations to all our newest graduates!
 
Thirty-two undergraduate majors were feted on May 15 at the annual SOA graduation brunch, along with several graduate degree recipients. In addition, several undergraduates were honored with awards. The SOA Scholar’s Award was presented to Caitlin Hawley and Carlyn StewartNejla Hummer and Roberto Gonzalez received the Scholar’s Award Honorable Mention. Lillian Stolar andKathryn Turney received the SOA Leadership Award, and the Leadership Award Honorable Mention went to Zachariah Mills and Hanna Kingsley. Honorable Mention, Scholar’s Award: Nejlah Hummer(shown at left) graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology and environmental studies. Nejlah’s interests are in environmental policy, planning, and urban issues. Nejlah participated in study abroad in Cuba and community-based research experiences with an internship in the Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology. She contributed to the evolution of a partnership between BARA and the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona and an ethnography on factors affecting community food insecurity. In 2014, she received the SGD Outstanding Environmental Studies Award. Nejlah has been accepted into the UA’s Masters of Science in Planning Program for Fall 2015.

Leadership Award: Kathryn Turney, a first generation college student, began her study of Archaeology after a successful career in publishing. She is the proud mother of three biological children, two stepchildren and one adopted child, all grown, along with four fur babies. She is also grandmother of two girls. Kathryn is a member of the Dean’s List, a member of BARA, and recipient of several scholarships while at the University of Arizona. She looks forward to her next step, graduate studies in the Applied Program at Northern Arizona University in Fall 2015.
