SoA at HPSfAA Conference in Denver

The annual conference for the High Plains Society for Applied Anthropology (HPSfAA) was held in Denver, April 23–26, 2015. The theme of the conference was Holistic Health and Healing: Indigenous and Alternative Medicine. Two ethnographic researchers represented the University of Arizona and the School of Anthropology/BARA at this conference. Dr. Kathleen Van Vlack (Post-doctoral Research Associate, BARA) presented on Southern Paiute pilgrimage on the Arizona Strip and ceremony associated with volcanism. Dr. Van Vlack earned her Ph.D. in America Indian Studies in May 2012, and has been working with Professor Richard Stoffle in the Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology (BARA) since January 2002. Dr. Van Vlack is the current President of the HPSfAA. Evelyn Pickering, a recent Master’s graduate from the School of Anthropology, also attended the conference and presented on her research on the social connections to water resources in Dominica, and social impacts of bulk water exportation and climate change on the island. At the HPSfAA conference, she was presented with the Gottfried and Martha Lang Student Award in Applied Anthropology. Evelyn entered the School of Anthropology graduate program in the fall of 2012, and has been working for Dr. Richard Stoffle in BARA since May 2012. (Original Digest publication date: 5/1/2015)
