CENTENNIAL UPDATE: The Anthropology of Food and Nutrition—Off to a Great Start!

Steven Raichlen spoke Thursday night to kick of the weekend of centennial events. His talk, “Up in Smoke: A History of Barbecue,” was a wide ranging tour of live fire cooking across time and geography. Attended by over 300 people (including at least four vegetarians that we know of), Steven entertained the crowd with images and stories of human evolution, culture, and travel and provided a great start to a weekend of events focused on the Anthropology of Food and Nutrition.

This afternoon there will be a symposium at 1:00–4:00 in Haury 216. “The Human Appetite: A Symposium on Food and Anthropology” features Associate Professors Maribel AlvarezMamadou Baro, and Ivy Pike; recent graduate Ashley Stinnett (Ph.D. Arizona, 2014); and graduate students Victoria Moses and Amanda Hilton.

Tomorrow, be sure to be at ASM from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday for “10,000 Years of Eating in the Southwest,” with tours, music, and Southwestern specialty foods. Earlier in the week, on Thursday evening, April 23, the Centennial presents “Up in Smoke: The History of Barbecue with Host Steven Raichlen.” Details for all of next weekend’ events are available here.
