Community based participatory researchers and community health programs are increasingly interested in how trust is built, especially in the context of community partnerships. We examine trust at the theory level and how it can be applied on-the-ground in community work with clear, easy-to-frame outcomes and measures. We examine how our model of trust building makes transparent a process of building sustainable change in the context of close-to-community health partnerships in Kenya.  We show how 5 community health units, serving a population of approximately 25,000, have developed trust in their communities to engage more than 130 community health volunteers across 21 teams. They are doing work that addresses community priorities that map onto the full spectrum of social determinants of health.
