BARA Announces Two New Graduate Awards

October 2009 - The Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology is happy to announce two new graduate awards available to graduate students specializing in applied Anthropology. Both awards are supported by a generous contribution from Professor Emeritus A. Richard Diebold, Jr. and the Salus Mundi Foundation.

The BARA Graduate Travel Award will be given to one or more graduate students to support travel and registration expenses to attend a professional meeting of applied social scientists. The BARA Graduate Research Award will be given to one or more advanced graduate students to support dissertation research and/or write-up.

New University Partnership For Disaster Risk Management In Ethiopia

July 27, 2007 - Higher Education for Development (HED), in cooperation with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID/Ethiopia), announces a new award for a university partnership in Ethiopia. The University of Arizona (UA), Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology (BARA) receives a $200,000 award to create a regional center of excellence on disaster risk management and sustainable development in collaboration with Bahir Dar University (BDU). Traditional Use at SRM Meeting

February 2007 - Rebecca S. Toupal, Assistant Research Scientist with BARA, and Richard Arnold, representative of the Consolidated Group of Tribes and Oganizations, presented a poster about Traditional Piņon Pine Management (PowerPoint) at the 60th Annual Meeting of the Society for Range Management in Reno, NV. Visitors to the poster included university professors and students from the U.S. and Mexico, federal and state agency range managers, Native Americans, ranchers, and high school range students. Everyone was intrigued by the innovative approach to dealing with fuel loads and invasive plant species, and the potential benefits from traditional practices to rangelands and the cultures that depend upon them.

Brian Burke wins 2006 Nash-Roseberry Student Paper Prize

January 2007 - The 2006 Nash-Roseberry Student Paper Prize from the Society for Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology was awarded to Brian Burke for a paper based on his work with the Latin American Co-operatives project: “Historical and Contemporary Globalizations and Indigenous Power in the Brazilian Amazon.” The article will appear in the Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology. A summary will be in the next issue of Anthropology News.

Alaska Talks

December 2006 - Dr. Richard Stoffle, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Arizona in the Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology, presented free public lectures in Anchorage, Seward, Fairbanks and Nenana. His presentation is entitled: "Powerful Connections: The Paths of the Southern Paiute in a Volcanic Landscape." Dr. Stoffle's lecture is sponsored by the Alaska Anthropological Association Public Education Group through a grant from the Alaska Humanities Forum.

Blackfeet Site Survey

December 2006 - M. N. Zedeño and her research assistants Kacy Hollenback (University of Arizona) and Dale Fenner (Blackfeet Community College) conducted a field survey and assessment of Blackfeet sacred sites and traditional use areas along the Birch Creek watershed, Lewis and Clark National Forest, Montana.
